Here comes our heatwave – at least for Monday and Tuesday with southerly winds and 20 to 21 degrees C. A change on Wednesday with showers, some could be heavy, but Thursday and Friday look dry and sunny although a bit cooler at 17 degrees C.
So with very warm weather and showers following those warm days we will check that the vegetables don’t dry out as well as checking any planters.
The raspberries, red and blackcurrants are ready for picking, so too the peas and broad beans need picking then blanching and into the freezer for the winter months. Although nothing can beat eating peas straight from the pod, delicious!
The weeds have had a field day this past week so plenty of weeding and dead heading of the flowers in the borders to do. Again the lawns need edging and tiding up.
This past week we have had to deal with cutting out some small and larger limbs from a couple of Elms which have started to show signs of Dutch Elm disease and these will need to be burnt. I see another bonfire coming on!! Of course this is just postponing the inevitable. The trees will have to eventually be felled, most likely within the next 5 years.
Still looking for butterflies which have been lacking these past few weeks in our garden although we have had plenty of bumblebees of all kinds and different types of flies too. Hopefully the butterflies will emerge in the warm days to come!
