Garden Tips#17

May 22, 2016 by Gwynne Hetherington

The weather pattern is like a yo-yo. We are back to cool to chilly nights. Monday should be dry, cloudy am. and sunny pm. Tuesday and Wednesday will be cooler with northerly winds. It looks to be getting slowly warmer on Thursday and more so for the weekend!

Last week’s weather didn’t quite come true so I have got a lot of weeding done – the weeds have enjoyed the damp conditions, but I’m still playing catch up with other garden jobs.

Just pruned the hydrangeas and hardy fuchsia, also the roses needed attention, cutting out any dead wood, and all went on the little bonfire. I love bonfires!

Obviously the weeds are still having a field day, but if we get some dry days the hoe will deal with them. I am going to plant out the annuals, sweet peas, cosmos and nicandra I have brought on, into empty pockets in the flower borders.

The pond needs regular attention every few days by removing the blanket weed and the fallen birch catkins etc. The roses too need attention by looking out for aphids which  I squish or sometimes I use soapy water.

The perennials are growing at a fast rate of knots and some will need extra staking  and support. So do the broad beans, we knock two by two stakes along the row of beans and support the growing stems with some twine.

Most of all we have enjoyed listening and watching the various birds making nests and feeding the young and then we watch the young after they have left the nest still being fed by the adult birds. The swallows and house martens have arrived and it is lovely hearing their twitter and watching their aerobatics. What a journey they have made!
