Garden Tips #46

March 19, 2017 by Gwynne Hetherington

Quite a raw feel for this coming week’s weather. Brace yourselves,  night temperatures are dropping down to near freezing 1-2C for the next 4 days. Day-time temperatures should be around 5-7C . Monday  looks to be the wettest day of the week, the following days are dry and cloudy with sunny spells and the occasional shower is not unlikely.

Our fruit trees will get a feed of a balanced fertilizer such as Growmore or bonemeal.

Still a little more weeding to do in the herbaceous borders then I will mulch between the plants and add some more hoops to tall growing plants for supports.

In the young woodland there is a lot of Bittercress to weed out followed by Broad-leaved Willowherb some two weeks later.

With temperatures slightly rising towards the weekend we will plant the Broad Beans and sow some Turnip seeds into the allotted vegetable beds. I will also sow some hardy annuals in the open ground and let nature take care of them!

David will prune the coloured stemmed Cornus (Dogwood) pretty hard back. With the fresh stems I shall try and attempt to make some wreaths (they will be in use for Christmas time as decorations). What a thought!

There will be a lot of seedlings to prick out  and replant into seed trays for them to grow on.
